Random Foolishness of the week? Or the realist thing Baby ever said? Lets examine the facts. First, here’s Baby’s entire quote from a recent vibe interview.
“He can rap, he can sing, he’s just an artist,” he says. “I don’t think no one will ever be greater [than Wayne] because I don’t think no one puts in the time or the quality. If someone do come along, can you imagine what he’ll have to do? He got to put out on thousand mixtapes, do a thousand records [and] sell 100 million records. 2Pac, Jay-Z and Biggie didn’t get to the shit Wayne’s done.”
Read the rest after this.
If you take output Wayne easily outpaces Biggie, but 2pac and Jay-Z are a whole nother matter. While Jay hasn’t really been a mixtape artist except for the occasional verse and the two outstanding S. Carter mix cds, his output especially in his earlier years is ridiculous. 2pac also keeps up with and may even outpace Wayne if you go with a year by year case. Of course Wayne will eventually outpace 2pac and Jay-Z especially if he continues at his current ridiculous rate of production. As far as features the cases remain about the same, with Biggie even gaining an edge in this category during the years he was alive.
Now the 100 million claim sold claim? Wayne is definitely not a hundred million artist, even if you consider his work with the Hot Boys. I think Jay-Z may be closer to this statistic but not quite yet either. However 2pac, Jay, and Biggie probably sell more records per year with back catalog sales than Lil Wayne, and will continue to do so unless he continues to create albums of the Carter III calibre.
Overall I’d have to say that Baby’s claims while exorbitant, aren’t as insane as they may seem at first glance. Lil Wayne has definitely evolved into a credible artist, capable of making both raw, unadorned riddles for the sake of rhyming, as well as fully crafted concept songs that will stand the test of time. If he continues to work at the rate he has established over the last five or six years he will definitely make Baby more of a pyschic than Ms. Cleo.
